It is very rare that something hits aviation enthusiasts’ market that is so totally new and different, but the SBS-1 is such a product and is as exciting and innovative for the aircraft spotter / enthusiast as when the first AirBand Scanner arrived over a quarter of a century ago ! The SBS-1 is a special receiver that decodes Mode S / ADS-B transponder signals (see diagram) from aircraft and in conjunction with the supplied Basestation* software, displays this information on a VIRTUAL RADAR SCREEN enabling REAL-TIME aircraft tracking on your desk-top or lap-top PC. You can adjust your “radar” range from your local area to hundreds of miles, but as with any radio receiver, reception is limited by the aerial, but even with the supplied magnetic aerial in excess of 200nm is possible. An externally mounted aerial is available as an optional extra.
