The long awaited replacement for the set (Icom's IC-R2) that threw the 'conventional  design  book' out of the window and changed the scanner scene when it was released in the late '90s. In the IC-R5 Icom  have added some features  which were missing from its' predecessor i.e. a DC socket, alpha-numeric memory tagging, 8.33kHz Airband frequency steps and increased the memory to 1000 channels.

Initial use of the R5 revealed that it is easier to program the memory channels than the R2 and our 'gut feeling' is that it is slightly more sensitive on the VHF Airband. It also retains the high standard of audio quality set by the R2.

If you own an IC-R2 this may well be the upgrade you've been waiting for. It is one of the most compact scanner designs available, fitting, quite literally into the palm of the hand, providing the user with a choice of listening from the popular areas of monitoring.
